From Worms to Wellness: Cathy Nesbitt’s Journey to Joy, Sustainability, and Self-Care
In this refreshing conversation from the Women on the Rise segment of the BFF Empowerment Podcast, host Blaque Diamond sits down with Cathy to unpack her fascinating path from composting with worms to becoming a global laughter advocate. Here’s a look at the wisdom she shares.
🌍 Turning Garbage Into Gold—Literally
When Cathy first encountered worm composting, she was terrified. But a teacher friend asked her to worm-sit, and that was the spark. She eventually discovered the value of vermicomposting—using red wiggler worms to break down food waste and create nutrient-rich soil, often called “black gold.”
“These worms eat half their weight in food scraps each day and turn garbage into something beautiful.”
Not everyone is thrilled by the idea of worms in their house, but Cathy explains that they stay contained, don’t smell, and offer a powerful solution to food waste—especially for people without access to outdoor composting.
😂 Laughter Really Is the Best Medicine
After years of hearing “Ew, worms in the house?” Cathy found herself discouraged. That’s when she was introduced to laughter yoga—a practice that uses intentional, playful laughter and deep breathing to relieve stress, boost immunity, and increase joy.
“When we laugh, we release dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins—our love drugs.”
Cathy launched her free weekly online laughter club in 2020, and it’s still going strong. Participants from around the world join in for 30 minutes of joyful self-care—no jokes required, just heart-opening giggles.
🌱 Why Sprouts Belong in Your Kitchen (and Diet)
The third piece of Cathy’s trifecta? Sprouting. She grows mung beans and other seeds right on her countertop using a simple sprouter—no soil needed. Sprouts are packed with enzymes, hydration, and nutrients that support digestion and overall wellness.
“Adding sprouts to your life adds life to your life.”
They’re affordable, accessible, and energy-boosting—especially for people seeking better health through food.
❤️ The Bigger Message: Choose Joy and Simplicity
Cathy’s work might seem quirky to some, but her mission is clear: help people reconnect to natural solutions, live more sustainably, and choose joy every single day. Whether it’s through growing food, managing waste, or giggling with strangers, Cathy reminds us that small choices can lead to big transformations.
“When we feel good, we do good.”
